Steelcase Project

[25/9/2012]

My name is Kevin Coyle and I am a Product Design Engineering student at the Glasgow School of Art/University of Glasgow. This series of blogs will detail the design process I followed for my first semester project.

Design Brief

Working with the Glasgow office of Steelcase Solutions, my classmates and I have been tasked with designing an office chair for the year 2035. To do this, we will have to try and envisage what the world will be like in 23 years time - how we will work, how we will live, the technology we will have at our disposal and how we will interact with one another. This will present a unique set of challenges but I'm certainly looking forward to it.

Mind Maps

[26/9/2012]

As always I began the design process with a mind map. It's a great way to get all your ideas out at once on a single page. Although most of these areas are not directly related to designing a chair, it's important to see the overall context and to try and gain some sort of understanding of what life in 2035 will be like. If i can better understand the world the user inhabits, I will be better placed to design something that meets their needs.
